West Coast b-boys doing that white b-boy thing, Kottonmouth Kings combine Beastie Boy rhymes (without the brains to back them up) and Sublime-like SoCal ska (without the chops to back them up) for a witless, predictable debut album. Loaded with up-in-smoke winks and nudges -- bud and blunts cover the subjects of nearly every song here -- Royal Highness relies on obvious samples (like on "Suburban Life," which sounds an awful lot like something those other Beastie wannabes, the Fun Lovin' Criminals, would do) and inane, rallying chants (about bud and blunts; what else?) to get its one-note message across. Worse, the Kings' hangin'-with-da-homeboys 'tude (best displayed on "Dog's Life") comes off forced and rather wretched, a desperate cry for attention from a group of lost kids rolling with the times. An all-around worthless endeavor.

Kings: Brad "Daddy X", D Loc, Johnny Richter, Pakelika, Bobby B, Munchie, Lou Dog.It doesn't take too much effort to determine where the collective mind of this exceedingly funky white rap outfit is at. With marijuana leaves plastered all over the album cover and such songs as "All About the Weed" and "Brain on Drugs," it's pretty clear these boys aren't exactly focusing on socio-political commentary. To their credit, the Kings carve out their own style on HIDDEN STASH II. Rather go down the pasty-faced gangsta road of Eminem or align themselves with over-the-top rap-rockers, the quartet pursues a sound typified by syncopated, intensely danceable beats and energetic but never overdone vocal delivery. Despite occasional stylistic diversions such as the hardcore punk attack of "Dying Daze" and the reggae lilt of "Tell me Why," the musical focus is squarely on pumped-up hip-hop (a genre never known for its aversion to the Kings' favorite lyrical theme).

Rollin Stoned
years after their formation, rap/metal/punk hybrids Kottonmouth Kings arrive with the tightest album of their career in Rollin' Stoned. In the past, their albums were often uneven mixtures of the aforementioned genres with little more than a bad attitude connecting the tracks. But with singer Brad Daddy X stepping behind the boards after the dismal reaction to 2001's Hidden Stash, Vol. 2, the band seems more sonically united than they ever have before. Cutting most of their hard rock elements and focusing on a G-funk production style to carry their rhymes, Kottonmouth Kings let it all hang out on the 22 songs here. There's nothing really new, but they have managed to cut out many of the bad habits that plagued their music before and have put their best elements into focus. Good-time anthems like "Float Away" and "Positive Vibes" emphasize friendship and treasuring memories, a healthy message that adds an appropriate balance to the "dark" side of their sound. This "dark" side is undoubtedly dominant, featuring the pro-marijuana/anti-establishment vibe that has always been their trademark. But this time they attempt to drag some politics into the fray to back up their points, making tracks like "Zero Tolerance" actually introduce a little logic into the whole affair. This isn't exactly Billy Bragg, but the effort is appreciated when virtually every song deals with the topic in some way. If you've heard the band before, you know exactly what you're in for, but this is probably the best example of how effective this music can be. Besides, promoting good times, friendship, rebellion, and casual marijuana use means there is already a built-in audience for this album, but these listeners should know that Kottonmouth Kings put a lot of effort into making this their best album so far.

"The Pimp" Smith (background vocals). Owing a stylistic debt to Cypress Hill (who make an appearance here), the Kottonmouth Kings cultivated a sizeable herb-loving underground following by 2005. Despite hailing from one of the most affluent addresses in the United States--Orange County, California--the seven-man outfit serves up concoctions leaning heavily on the harder-edged side of hip-hop. While the Kings incorporate punk and psychedelia into their music, the group's sound is firmly rooted in rap. The Kings' self-titled effort opens with a vibe that would not be out of place on a Trick Daddy release, as the Kottonmouth rappers play off of each other with the ease of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony on the opener, "King Klick." The group channels Bad Brains on the first half of "Revolution," and the Sex Pistols on "Slow Suicide," and waxes reflective and melodic on "Let the Sunshine," but this is primarily a hip-hop album, and a raw one at that. In an impressive three-track suite, the Kings wedge the hazy ballad "Get Your High On" between two Lil Jon-like club anthems, "Make It Hot" and "Bottoms Up," making for the highlight of KOTTONMOUTH KINGS.
